Global Marine Systems
JADE (Jointing Automated Document Environment)
|
| |
Global Marine (GM) is a marine technology and engineering company, specialising in the laying and maintenance of submarine telecom cables. In 1988, GM laid TAT-8, the first transatlantic fibre optic submarine cable. In 1990, they laid NPC, the first transpacific fibre optic submarine cable.
A major player in the cable business, Global Marine selected Technical Direct as their development partner to redevelop their Jointing Automated Document Environment (JADE). Jointing is crucial to the whole maintenance operation within Global Marine and JADE is critical to delivering this service.
The initial challenge of the project was to analyse and extract key business rules from a legacy application which had no supporting documentation and limited product knowledge within the organisation. The original application had become unsupportable and required an urgent redevelopment into a modern, supportable development platform.
The redeveloped JADE solution was a .NET windows application utilising a SQL Server 2000 database, integrating with MS office applications and legacy mail systems. JADE is the first software of its kind to be developed for the submarine cable industry.
JADE greatly improves Global Marine Systems ability to deliver the highest quality joints, completed quickly and reported accurately and consistently.
JADE is cutting edge jointing technology, allowing monitoring of the speed at which each portion of a joint is completed and the targeting of areas of jointing development. This makes a real difference to end customers, as it:
- Always works with the latest jointing
information.
- Is checked electronically at the start
of each joint build.
- Monitors quality issues and records
all of these in a comprehensive report
for the customer.
JADE contributes significantly to the achievement of ‘right first time’ joints and represents a major investment in the improvement of jointing quality for Global Marine customers.
Summary
Technical Direct worked closely with Global Marine Systems in the analysis, development and deployment of JADE. The solution ensures high quality control through the cable jointing procedure. JADE is now deployed on all Global Marine cable vessels throughout the world.
Benefits
- Complete and successful
replacement of an unmanageable
legacy system.
- Flexible Interface.
- Easy to use, accurate management
reporting.
- Real time jointing progress, viewable
remotely from the jointing area.
- Remote data management which can
be transmitted to the ships, ensuring
all vessels have the latest data.
